A Rich Tradition

The history of Vienna’s Christmas markets dates back to the late Middle Ages, with the first recorded market appearing in 1298. Since then, these markets have evolved into cherished holiday traditions, drawing locals and tourists alike to enjoy the festive atmosphere, artisan crafts, and delicious seasonal treats.

A Touch of Vienna’s History: The Snow Globe

Vienna holds a unique claim to Christmas history as the birthplace of the snow globe. The story begins in 1900, when a Viennese man named Erwin Perzy, a surgical instrument maker, accidentally invented this now-iconic holiday item. Perzy was working on a project to create a brighter light bulb for medical purposes, but instead of achieving his goal, he discovered that tiny particles floating in water created an effect that resembled snowfall.

This discovery inspired him to place a miniature model of the Basilica of Mariazell (a famous Austrian pilgrimage site) inside a glass sphere filled with water and particles, creating the very first snow globe. This charming invention became a sensation, and by 1905, Perzy and his family had established a snow globe workshop in Vienna, which continues to operate today. Known as the Original Vienna Snow Globe Company, it’s still run by the Perzy family and offers an array of handmade globes featuring iconic Austrian and holiday scenes.
